SHARE Support to Lao PDR
The SHARE Team Leader, Dr Stefan Hell, visited the Laotian capital Vientiane in August 2016 to learn about higher education developments in the country. He met the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sisamone Sithirajvongsa, as well as the Department of Higher Education, the International relations Department and the Educational Standards and Quality assurance Centre (ESQAC) under the same ministry.
Dr. Hell was also received by the Vice President of National University of Laos (NUOL), Assoc. Prof. Phout Simmalavong and senior managers of NUOL to discuss issues of student mobility, credit transfer and quality assurance in the university’s strategic development plan and the role SHARE could play. A meeting with Michel Goffin, Chargé d’Affaires at the EU Delegation in Vientiane, and his team, served to understand the EU’s work on education generally in Lao PDR, as well as to brief EU colleagues on SHARE.
Among SHARE’s wide range of work on policy and technical issues, the programme has the explicit mandate to focus on the least developed ASEAN Member States, among them Lao PDR, to ensure that regional higher education developments also benefit these so-called CLMV countries. Dr. Hell’s visit was very useful in enabling SHARE to target activities accordingly and to ensure that Lao PDR continues to be well represented in SHARE’s work.
